Meta has announced a significant expansion of its Hyperion data center project located in Richland Parish, Louisiana, increasing its planned compute capacity from 2 gigawatts to 5 gigawatts. This move pushes the company's total investment in the region beyond $50 billion, positioning the site as a major hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure. The expansion is part of a broader effort to secure the necessary computing power to support the company's long-term technology goals.

Beyond the core data center construction, Meta has committed to investing more than $1 billion in local infrastructure improvements. This funding is intended to support various community projects and workforce development initiatives. As part of these efforts, the company is donating $5 million to the Louisiana Delta Community College to establish scholarships. These scholarships are designed to train local residents for specialized roles within the data center industry, with full coverage available to all Richland Parish high school graduates starting with the class of 2026.

The project also includes a new energy agreement with Entergy Louisiana, which is projected to save the utility's customers more than $2 billion over the next two decades. This agreement follows a previous arrangement that provided $650 million in savings. To meet the increased power demands of the 5GW facility, the energy plan involves the development of seven new natural gas-fueled power plants, three grid-scale battery installations, and various nuclear power uprates.

Local officials and business owners have reported notable economic impacts since the project's inception. The Richland Parish School District noted that teacher bonuses have increased significantly, which has helped the district attract fully certified educators. Additionally, local businesses ranging from restaurants to transportation services have reported substantial growth in their customer bases and operational capacity, with some local workers seeing their annual earnings rise above the regional median income.

Meta maintains that it covers the full costs associated with the water, energy, and related infrastructure required for the data center operations to ensure that these expenses are not passed on to local consumers. The company continues to partner with local chambers of commerce and workforce academies to provide training for entrepreneurs and to connect regional suppliers with subcontracting opportunities at the site.
