Google has introduced two significant updates to its Vids platform, integrating the Gemini Omni model and a new personal avatar feature. These tools are designed to streamline the video production process by allowing users to generate and edit content using natural language prompts rather than traditional manual editing techniques.
The Gemini Omni integration enables users to create high-quality video clips by providing simple text descriptions or image references, such as sketches or photographs. This functionality extends to the editing phase, where users can refine existing footage—whether generated by the AI or captured on a mobile device—by describing specific adjustments like background swaps, lighting corrections, or the addition of visual effects.
For users who need to deliver video messages without the need for a camera setup, the new personal avatar feature offers a digital alternative. By uploading a single selfie and a short voice sample, users can generate an avatar that mimics their appearance and vocal characteristics. Once configured, the avatar can deliver scripted messages based on text input provided by the user, eliminating the need for repeated recording sessions.
To maintain content transparency, Google has implemented SynthID digital watermarking across all AI-generated clips. This invisible marker is designed to allow viewers to verify that the content was produced using artificial intelligence. The company emphasizes that this measure is intended to support responsible sharing and creative exploration within the platform.
Access to these new capabilities is currently restricted to specific user groups, including Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, as well as Google Workspace business customers. Furthermore, the personal avatar feature is subject to regional availability and is restricted to users who are at least 18 years old. The avatars are tied directly to the individual's Google account and are limited to representing the account holder's own likeness.
