Google updates Gemini Notebook with compute-based usage limits

Starting September 2, Gemini Notebook will transition to a dynamic usage model that calculates limits based on task complexity rather than fixed daily generation counts.

Google is shifting the operational model for Gemini Notebook, moving away from a static number of daily feature generations toward a compute-specific usage system. This change, which mirrors the update applied to the broader Gemini app earlier this year, is scheduled to begin rolling out to consumer accounts on both web and mobile platforms on September 2.

Under the new framework, the platform will calculate usage limits by factoring in variables such as prompt complexity, the length of the chat, the number of sources referenced, and the specific features being utilized. This approach is designed to provide users with more flexibility in how they allocate their available compute budget throughout the day.

A significant change in this update is the refresh cycle for usage limits. Instead of resetting once every 24 hours, the system will now refresh every five hours. This adjustment is intended to allow users to maintain their workflows more consistently across the day, rather than being restricted by a single daily cap that could be exhausted early.

To help users manage these new limits, Google is integrating tracking indicators directly into the interface. A status message will appear below the chat window to inform users when they are approaching their limit and provide the specific time when their capacity will reset. Additionally, a visual bar will appear at the bottom of Studio generations to indicate the expected compute cost of a request, with a fuller bar representing a higher cost.

The system also includes features to mitigate the impact of reaching a limit. Gemini Notebook will suggest alternative outputs if a user's initial request exceeds their remaining capacity. For more intensive tasks, such as creating Video Overviews or Slide Decks, users can select a "Generate later" option to defer the process. These tasks will then be completed automatically once the user's limit resets, with the option to receive notifications when the content is ready.

The specific capacity available to users will continue to depend on their subscription tier. Free users will have access to standard limits, while those with Google AI Plus subscriptions will receive double the standard capacity. Google AI Pro subscribers will have four times the standard limit, and Google AI Ultra subscribers will receive either five or twenty times the capacity of the Pro tier, depending on their specific plan.
