Microsoft has developed a disc-to-digital program that enables users to register physical Xbox game discs to their digital Microsoft account. This system leverages the unique serial numbers embedded in the Blu-ray discs of Xbox One and Xbox Series games. Once a disc is inserted into a console with an optical drive, the game is validated and assigned to the user's account, allowing any console linked to that account to play the title. If the disc is lent to another user, the license shifts to their account until the original owner re-inserts the disc into their console. However, this program is incompatible with original Xbox and Xbox 360 games, as those discs were not serialized during manufacturing.
