Valve has released its Steam Survey results for October 2026, reporting that Linux gaming usage reached 3.95% of the platform's total user base. This figure represents a modest 0.05% increase from the previous month, following a period of volatility in the survey data. Valve revised its September figures to 3.9% after an initial report showed a sharper decline, which the company attributed to a significant shift in Simplified Chinese user activity that typically correlates with higher Windows usage.

The current Linux adoption rate stands in contrast to the same period last year, when Linux gaming on Steam first surpassed the 3% threshold in October 2025. While Linux continues to grow, it remains a minority platform compared to Windows, which currently accounts for 93.7% of Steam users, and macOS, which holds a 2.35% share. The data highlights the ongoing influence of hardware like the Steam Deck, which utilizes custom AMD processors and contributes to the fact that AMD CPU usage among Linux gamers remains just under 70%.

Within the Linux ecosystem, Arch Linux-based CachyOS has solidified its position as the most popular distribution among Steam users, capturing 16.3% of the market. It continues to outpace SteamOS, which currently sits at 13.89% in second place. These figures reflect the diverse range of distributions utilized by the Linux gaming community, even as Valve continues to refine its own software offerings for the platform.

Beyond hardware and OS trends, the broader Linux desktop environment saw a flurry of software updates throughout October. Applications such as OpenShot 4.1, Thunderbird 159, and OBS Studio 33.0 received significant feature additions and performance optimizations. These updates, ranging from improved hardware encoding support for ARM-based laptops in OBS Studio to new text-to-speech capabilities in various readers, underscore the continued development of the Linux software landscape for both general productivity and specialized gaming workflows.
