OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a specialized version of its AI platform tailored for users between the ages of 13 and 17. The new experience is automatically applied to accounts identified as belonging to teenagers, either through self-reported age or OpenAI’s internal age-prediction technology. The rollout began on August 18, 2026, for free and paid personal plans, with full availability in Australia scheduled for September 8.
The platform includes a suite of safety measures enabled by default, designed to limit exposure to content involving violence, self-harm, eating disorders, or sexually explicit material. To further protect younger users, the interface features sensitive-image upload reminders that warn teens about the risks of sharing private or graphic media. Additionally, the system includes periodic prompts encouraging users to take breaks during extended sessions.
A core component of the teen-focused experience is the integration of Study Mode, which provides step-by-step guidance and interactive quizzes to assist with homework. New responsible homework reminders are designed to detect when a user may be attempting to bypass assignments, redirecting them toward collaborative problem-solving instead. Parents can also configure Study Hours, a setting that forces the platform into Study Mode by default during designated times.
Parental controls remain a central pillar of the update, allowing guardians with linked accounts to manage specific settings and receive notifications regarding high-risk activity. These tools include the ability to set Quiet Hours and monitor interactions. OpenAI has also implemented measures to clarify the nature of the AI, explicitly reminding users that the chatbot lacks consciousness, feelings, or emotions to discourage the formation of human-like relationships.
Users who believe they have been incorrectly placed into the teen experience can verify their age to request the removal of these specific protections. The company stated that this initiative is part of a broader effort to provide age-appropriate access to AI tools while reinforcing real-world relationships and supporting healthy usage habits as teenagers develop.
