Microsoft has released five new Windows 11 Insider builds across its Beta, Experimental, and Future Platforms channels, headlined by a significant update to the File Explorer context menu. The company aims to address long-standing user feedback regarding the responsiveness and clutter of the right-click interface, which has been a frequent point of friction since the initial launch of Windows 11.
The redesigned context menu is engineered to open more quickly by reducing default visual clutter and streamlining the underlying code. Microsoft notes that the previous iteration had become sluggish as various applications added their own extensions, leading to delays. The new version prioritizes commonly used actions while moving less frequent options into a dedicated settings area.
A new "Customize menu" option located at the bottom of the right-click interface provides a direct shortcut to a settings page within the Personalization section. This allows users to toggle built-in Windows commands and tailor the menu layout to their specific workflows. Microsoft describes this as the first of several planned updates intended to make File Explorer feel more polished and dependable.
Beyond the visual changes, the update includes foundational performance improvements aimed at reducing system hangs and delays. Microsoft reports that it has eliminated numerous potential stalls that previously occurred during file renaming, browsing, and navigation. These changes are designed to ensure that background processes, such as file synchronization, no longer interrupt user interactions.
Additional usability refinements have been implemented to improve daily navigation. The Address Bar now supports a broader range of inputs, including paths containing quotation marks and double backslashes. Furthermore, middle-click functionality has been expanded to allow users to open folders in new tabs directly from the Address Bar and Home page, facilitating faster multitasking.
The update also addresses minor interface details to improve clarity. The Details pane has been reorganized to make file properties easier to locate, and file sizes are now displayed using standardized units like KB, MB, and GB. Additionally, the Home view now preserves the expanded or collapsed state of sections, ensuring a more consistent experience when users return to the application.
