Apple has officially moved the iPhone X and the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro to its list of obsolete products. This classification signifies that the company and its authorized service providers will no longer offer hardware repairs or order replacement parts for these specific devices. The change, reflected in an updated support document, marks the end of official service support for two of the company's most notable hardware releases from the late 2010s.
The iPhone X, which debuted in November 2017, represented a significant shift in Apple's smartphone design language. It was the first iPhone to feature an OLED display and the Face ID biometric system, which replaced the traditional Touch ID home button. This transition allowed for an edge-to-edge screen design characterized by a prominent notch at the top of the display. While the device was a milestone for the product line, it faced early reports of hardware issues, including green lines appearing on screen edges and occasional malfunctions within the Face ID module.
Alongside the iPhone X, the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro has also reached obsolete status. This model was the first in the MacBook lineup to incorporate Apple's T2 security chip, which managed Touch ID data and secure boot processes. However, the 2018 MacBook Pro is also recognized for its inclusion of the butterfly keyboard mechanism, a design that prompted a long-running replacement program that concluded in 2024.
Apple defines a product as obsolete once seven years have passed since the company stopped distributing it for sale. While the iPhone X was released in 2017, it remained available through select resellers after Apple officially ceased sales in September 2018. Owners of these devices are now limited to third-party repair options, though the long-term viability of such repairs may be constrained by the availability of components.
Software support for these devices has also reached its conclusion. The iPhone X is limited to iOS 16, with its final major release being iOS 16.7.16. Similarly, the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro cannot be updated beyond macOS Sequoia. While some users may attempt to extend the life of these machines through third-party software patches, official support from Apple for both hardware and operating system updates has effectively ended.
