Blizzard announces Diablo 5 for spring 2029 release

Blizzard Entertainment officially announced Diablo 5 during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, confirming a scheduled release window of spring 2029. The reveal, which coincided with the franchise's 30th anniversary, introduces a significant narrative shift for the series. According to game director Joe Shely, the story takes place a century after the events of Diablo 4, presenting a world where Sanctuary has already fallen to Diablo.

This premise marks a departure from previous installments, as players will navigate a post-apocalyptic environment rather than attempting to prevent a catastrophe. Blizzard confirmed that the game will launch with three playable classes: the returning Demon Hunter and Monk, alongside a new addition called the Plague Knight. While specific gameplay mechanics remain undisclosed, the developer has characterized the setting as one devoid of traditional safe havens or towns.

Despite the long lead time for the sequel, Blizzard intends to maintain active support for Diablo 4. The studio announced that an Amazon class pack is slated for release in the first half of 2027, featuring four distinct gameplay archetypes: Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger, and Commander. This class will utilize bow and javelin weaponry, with the latter introducing a new weapon type to the current title.

In addition to the game announcement, Blizzard confirmed a partnership with Netflix to produce an animated series based on the Diablo franchise. While details regarding the release date and animation studio remain scarce, the project is part of a broader initiative by the company to expand its intellectual properties into transmedia adaptations, with similar plans hinted for the Overwatch and Warcraft franchises.
