Google announces new laptop platform called Googlebook to succeed current Chromebooks

Google has announced a new laptop platform, Googlebook, which will run on a forthcoming operating system called Aluminum OS. This new OS is designed to bridge the gap between Android mobile devices and desktop-class laptops, aiming for a more seamless, responsive user experience. While Googlebook devices will be manufactured by third-party partners like HP, Dell, and Acer, they will feature premium hardware and design elements, including a light strip on the lid reminiscent of previous Pixelbook models. The platform is built on the Android stack to facilitate faster innovation and better integration with Android phones. Although Googlebook is expected to launch in the second half of 2026, Google will not immediately discontinue existing Chromebooks, which will continue to receive software updates for approximately another decade. The new platform is expected to target the premium segment of the laptop market, with higher-end components for CPU and RAM. The transition signals a strategic shift for Google in the laptop space, moving away from the traditional, budget-focused ChromeOS model toward a more integrated, premium computing experience.
