Installing SteamOS on older hardware provides a viable alternative to dedicated gaming consoles

Installing SteamOS on older hardware, such as an X99 system with an Intel Core i7-5820K processor, offers a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a dedicated Steam Machine. While the official SteamOS recovery image requires an NVMe drive, using the Bazzite distribution allows for installation on systems utilizing SATA SSDs, bypassing the strict hardware checks. Performance testing on this configuration demonstrates that the system can handle modern titles like 007: First Light and Pragmata at 1080p with high settings, maintaining a playable average of 60 FPS. Counter-Strike 2 also performs well at 4K resolution with high settings. The use of AMD graphics cards is recommended for SteamOS due to their superior open-source driver support on Linux compared to NVIDIA hardware. This approach provides a smooth, stutter-free gaming experience on older hardware, although performance at 4K resolution is limited by the hardware's capabilities. The project highlights the potential for repurposing older PCs into functional gaming systems using open-source software.
