Valve has officially launched the Steam Frame, a wireless virtual reality headset that combines high-end hardware with advanced features like eye-tracking for foveated rendering and capacitive finger-sensing controllers. The device is powered by a 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 system-on-chip paired with 16GB of unified LPDDR5X memory. Valve is offering two storage configurations, with a 256GB model priced at £889 and a 1TB version at £1,089.

The headset utilizes dual LCD panels, each providing a resolution of 2160×2160 pixels. These displays support refresh rates ranging from 72Hz to 144Hz, with the highest setting currently labeled as experimental. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, alongside inside-out cameras for 6-DOF tracking. The unit includes a rechargeable 21.6Wh battery, though Valve notes that a power adapter is not included in the box; users must provide their own USB-C charger rated at 45W or higher.

While the hardware design is praised for its lightweight construction and balanced weight distribution, achieving an ideal fit may require additional ergonomic accessories. Valve offers an optional kit for £59 that includes a top head strap, controller hand straps, and an extended light blocker. The headset also features a magnetic padding system intended to simplify maintenance and cleaning, though the overall cost increases for users who opt for these add-ons or the available color passthrough camera upgrade.

Performance in wireless streaming is a standout feature, providing low-latency and stable connections for graphically intensive tasks. However, the standalone experience is currently constrained by software maturity. The device relies on Proton and FEX translation layers, which are still in early development. Consequently, the library of games verified for optimal performance is limited to 72 titles at launch. While the headset comes bundled with Half-Life: Alyx, the lack of a broader selection of native, high-quality VR content remains a significant hurdle for the platform.

Valve has implemented a randomized reservation system to manage initial demand, with sign-ups currently open to eligible users. The company expects early stock to sell out quickly, mirroring previous hardware releases. Following the registration period, Valve will notify selected applicants via email to proceed with their pre-orders.
