Samsung has officially expanded its foldable smartphone portfolio with the release of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The launch marks a shift in the company's design strategy, moving away from a single book-style foldable to offer distinct form factors. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 introduces a wider, more compact shape intended to improve ergonomics and video viewing, while the Ultra model retains the traditional, taller design language of its predecessors.
A significant technical update across the new foldable series is the integration of silicon-carbon battery technology. This represents a first for Samsung's mobile division, allowing for higher energy density compared to conventional lithium-ion cells. The technology enables the company to either increase battery capacity within the same physical footprint or maintain capacity while reducing the device's thickness. For instance, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra houses a 5,000mAh battery in a chassis similar to the previous generation, while the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 manages a 4,800mAh capacity despite its thinner, wider design.
The new devices are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and feature updated display technology, including anti-reflective coatings and improvements to the display crease. By introducing the Ultra branding, Samsung is distinguishing its established form factor from the new, wider standard model. The adoption of silicon-carbon batteries in these foldables is viewed as a precursor to future hardware developments, particularly for the upcoming Galaxy S27 series. Because silicon-carbon batteries are more complex to manufacture and prone to expansion, their successful implementation in the thin, intricate chassis of a foldable suggests that Samsung has addressed the necessary safety and structural requirements for wider deployment in its flagship slab phones.
