Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra offer distinct foldable experiences

Samsung has expanded its foldable lineup with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, two devices that share a common foundation but cater to different user needs. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra adheres to the established book-style design, featuring a tall 21:9 cover display that unfolds into a large, square-like inner screen. This model is engineered to provide a familiar smartphone experience, making the transition to a foldable device feel natural for long-time users.

In contrast, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 adopts a more compact approach with a 5.5-inch cover display using a 16:10 aspect ratio. When unfolded, the device reveals a 4:3 inner display that offers a wider workspace. This design allows users to rotate the phone into a portrait orientation for a taller view, providing flexibility for both entertainment and productivity tasks. The Fold 8 is positioned as a more accessible entry point into the series, though it retains premium build quality.

The two devices also diverge significantly in their camera systems. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra includes a 200MP primary sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP 3x telephoto camera. It also supports Samsung's APV codec for high-bitrate video recording and features a hinge design capable of holding stable angles for Flex Mode. The standard Fold 8 omits the dedicated telephoto lens, relying on digital zoom, and its hinge is not designed to remain securely open at multiple angles, limiting its use for hands-free photography.

Performance remains consistent across both models, as both are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. While the Ultra model features a larger 5,000mAh battery compared to the 4,800mAh capacity in the standard Fold 8, the increased power consumption of its larger displays results in similar real-world performance. Both phones support 45W wired and 20W wireless charging.

Software multitasking is tailored to each device's unique form factor. The wider display of the standard Fold 8 allows for three apps to run side-by-side with wider, more practical windows. The Ultra model also supports three-app multitasking but utilizes a more traditional layout where one app occupies half the screen while the others share the remaining space. Both devices benefit from Samsung's commitment to seven generations of Android OS upgrades.
