The Linux release supports several major distributions, with specific validation for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. OpenAI is providing the software through standard package formats, offering both .deb and .rpm installers to accommodate different system architectures. The app is available for both x64 and ARM64 systems, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of hardware configurations.
Beyond standard chat functionality, the desktop client offers deeper system integration than the traditional web-based experience. According to reports, the application can interact with local repositories via Codex, control other software through extensions, and access local files without requiring users to upload data to the cloud. This functionality aims to streamline tasks for developers and business users who rely on local file management.
Installation of the .deb package automatically adds an OpenAI repository to the user's system, which facilitates future updates through standard package management tools like apt. While the software is free to download and use with a standard OpenAI account, the company notes that certain advanced features remain gated behind paid subscription plans. As this is a public preview, users are advised that the software may contain bugs or experience reliability issues with specific integrations.
In addition to the desktop app launch, OpenAI recently introduced a new reservation capability within the ChatGPT platform. This feature allows users to search for and book restaurant tables through integrations with OpenTable, Resy, and Yelp. The tool is now rolling out globally across mobile, web, and desktop versions of the service, enabling users to filter results by party size, cuisine, budget, and dietary preferences directly within their chat sessions.
