Nvidia is officially launching DLSS 5, a new neural rendering technology, on September 3. The feature will debut in NBA 2K27, which becomes the first title to support the tool following its initial announcement at GTC 2026 earlier this year. The technology is restricted to Nvidia's RTX 50 series GPUs, with no current plans to extend support to older RTX 40 or RTX 30 series hardware.

Unlike previous iterations of DLSS that focused primarily on performance scaling, DLSS 5 is described by Nvidia as a diffusion transformer model designed to enhance visual fidelity. The company characterizes the technology as 3D guided neural rendering, which utilizes engine-side data such as G-Buffers—containing albedo, surface normals, depth, and motion vectors—to improve real-time image quality. Developers can apply masks to specific objects or characters to control how the model influences the scene.

The technology includes adjustable controls for structure and tone intensity, allowing developers to fine-tune high-frequency details like ambient occlusion and reflections, or low-frequency elements like lighting and contrast. Nvidia emphasizes that the model is deterministic, meaning it produces consistent outputs to ensure that character models and environmental details remain true to the original artistic intent. This approach aims to avoid the unpredictable results often associated with generative AI models.

Nvidia's implementation of DLSS 5 is intended to complement existing rendering pipelines rather than replace them. According to Edward Liu, director of applied deep learning research at Nvidia, the model leverages the dense information available in a rendered frame to bridge the gap between traditional physically-based rendering and photorealism. The company suggests that higher-quality base inputs, such as games running with ray tracing enabled, will yield better results when using the feature.

While the technology has faced scrutiny regarding its potential to alter character aesthetics, Nvidia maintains that it serves as a tool for artists to realize their creative vision. The launch follows six months of optimization work since the technology was first demonstrated at GTC and later at SIGGRAPH. For now, NBA 2K27 remains the only officially supported game, though industry expectations point toward a broader rollout of supported titles in the coming months.
