Microsoft Windows 11 September security updates cause USB audio and system issues

The updates, which were released as part of the company's standard Patch Tuesday cycle, have been linked to a loss of audio functionality for devices utilizing the USB Audio Class 1.0 standard. Affected users may experience unresponsive volume controls, inaccessible sound settings, or a "Code 10" error within the Windows Device Manager.

The audio issues appear to be most prevalent when using multichannel configurations, such as 8-channel or 3D audio modes. While Microsoft has not provided a permanent resolution, some users have reported success in restoring basic sound output by manually switching their audio settings to a 2-channel stereo mode. The company has clarified that this specific bug is limited to USB Audio Class 1.0 hardware, meaning internal motherboard audio codecs and wireless USB headsets are generally unaffected.
