Microsoft is overhauling its review pipeline for Microsoft Edge extensions to address growing submission volumes and reduce developer wait times. The company announced that it is implementing automated validation for repeatable checks, a move designed to streamline the approval process without compromising security or quality standards. By offloading routine policy and security verification to automated systems, Microsoft aims to allow its human reviewers to focus more effectively on complex submissions that require nuanced judgment.
The surge in extension submissions is largely attributed to the increased use of AI-assisted coding tools, which have enabled developers to build and iterate on browser add-ons at a faster pace. While this growth has expanded the options available to Edge users, it has also created a bottleneck in the review pipeline, leading to longer turnaround times for updates and new releases. Microsoft stated that the new automated workflow is intended to help bug fixes and feature updates reach users more quickly.
In addition to faster processing, Microsoft is updating how it highlights high-quality software on the Edge Add-ons website. The company uses a Featured badge to signal to users that an extension meets specific criteria for reliability, security, and user experience. To ensure this recognition remains accurate as developers improve their products, Microsoft will now refresh these badges every 15 days. This change allows developers to receive more timely feedback on their quality investments and ensures that users see a more current representation of the marketplace.
The evaluation process for the Featured badge remains rigorous, incorporating more than 60 distinct quality signals across various dimensions. Microsoft noted that much of this evaluation is already automated to maintain consistency and scalability as the ecosystem grows. By increasing the frequency of badge updates, the company intends to reward developers who actively maintain their extensions while helping users identify trustworthy tools more easily.
