Microsoft is set to implement monthly time limits for its Xbox Cloud Gaming service beginning in November. The change marks the end of unlimited cloud streaming for Game Pass members, with the company introducing tiered monthly allotments based on subscription level. Game Pass Essential members will receive five hours of cloud streaming per month, while Premium subscribers will be limited to 10 hours and Ultimate members to 15 hours.
The company stated that the decision stems from the rising costs associated with maintaining and scaling cloud infrastructure as user engagement increases. By introducing these caps, Microsoft aims to balance the service's ongoing reliability and performance with the operational expenses required to support it. While the company acknowledged that the shift will result in higher costs for some users, it estimates that the new restrictions will impact only about 4% of its total Game Pass subscriber base.
In addition to the new limits, Microsoft is expanding access to the service by allowing non-subscribers to purchase cloud playtime. This pay-as-you-go model will enable individuals to stream specific games they own on supported devices without maintaining a recurring Game Pass subscription. The company has not yet disclosed specific pricing for these additional hours or the pay-as-you-go access, noting that details will be provided before the changes take effect in November.
The move follows a period of strategic adjustments for the Xbox division, which has recently sought to optimize profitability. Microsoft noted that it intends to monitor player feedback closely as the transition occurs and may make adjustments to the program in the future. The company also indicated that availability, purchasing options, and specific cloud gaming features may vary depending on the market.
