Microsoft has released a series of new Windows 11 Insider Preview builds across its Experimental and Beta channels, bringing significant updates to the Cloud Rebuild recovery feature. This tool, designed to restore a PC to a clean state through a full operating system reinstall, is now more accessible and functional for testers. The latest updates include a dedicated entry point for the feature located within the Settings menu under System and Recovery, simplifying the process for users who need to perform a system reset.
The Experimental channel builds, specifically 28120.3151, now offer users more granular control over data removal during the recovery process. Insiders can choose between standard file removal and a new sanitize option, which is intended to make data significantly harder to recover after the reinstall. These options were introduced to provide users with greater flexibility and security when preparing a device for a fresh start or decommissioning a machine.
Beyond recovery improvements, the latest preview builds introduce updates to core system features. Windows text shaping support has been updated to align with Unicode 17.0, ensuring better compatibility and rendering for various character sets. Additionally, the Windows Magnifier tool has received functional enhancements, including new preset step increments and the ability for users to input an exact zoom percentage, offering more precision for accessibility needs.
The current release cycle includes a variety of builds tailored to different platforms, such as the 26H1 versions for specific hardware and the Experimental Future Platforms build 29680.1000. While the 26H1 codebase currently lags in terms of new feature parity compared to other versions, reports suggest that a future release in late 2027 is expected to unify the platform codebase for all users. Microsoft has also scheduled a Windows and Surface event for October 7, 2026, where further details regarding the ecosystem may be shared.
