This tool enables minors to make contactless payments at any merchant that accepts Google Pay by using an NFC-enabled Android smartphone or a compatible Wear OS wearable device.
The system is designed to function without the requirement of a traditional bank account, providing a way for families to manage money in an increasingly cashless environment. Parents can transfer funds directly from their own accounts into the child's digital balance, with the money becoming available for use immediately upon transfer. Google has indicated that functionality for scheduling automated, recurring payments will be added to the service in the near future.
To assist with financial oversight, the feature integrates with Google's Family Link platform. Through this interface, parents can monitor transaction history and receive real-time push notifications whenever a purchase is made. These alerts include specific details such as the transaction amount and the name of the retail location where the funds were spent.
The platform includes several security and management controls intended to help parents establish spending boundaries. Users can set daily spending limits to prevent overspending and can remotely lock or unlock the digital balance at any time. This capability is intended to provide a safeguard if a device is lost or stolen, or to enforce a temporary spending timeout.
This update positions Google to compete with existing services like Apple Cash Family, which offers similar parental controls for digital payments. By providing these virtual guardrails, the company aims to offer a practical method for parents to teach children healthy financial habits while maintaining full visibility and control over their activity.
