Google is significantly expanding its Freeplay streaming service on Google TV devices, transitioning the platform from a live-only experience to one that includes a substantial library of on-demand content. Users can now access more than 10,000 free movies and television shows without the need for a paid subscription, marking a shift in how the service competes with other ad-supported platforms like Pluto TV and Tubi.
The new on-demand catalog features a variety of titles from major studios, including A24 and Lionsgate. Among the specific content highlighted by Google are the film Lady Bird and the reality series Hell’s Kitchen. The company has stated that it intends to refresh this library periodically throughout the year to maintain a rotating selection of entertainment for viewers.
In addition to the on-demand expansion, Google is increasing the number of free live channels available through the service to over 300. This updated lineup covers a broad spectrum of genres, including news, sports, true crime, and reality television. New additions to the live channel roster include Bloomberg TV Plus, Yahoo! Sports Network, The Martha Stewart Channel, and World of Love Island.
The Freeplay service remains integrated directly into the Google TV interface, allowing users to access the expanded library through the dedicated Freeplay app located on the home screen. By moving beyond its original focus on live, linear television, Google is positioning the service as a more comprehensive destination for free, ad-supported streaming directly on its hardware.
This update arrives as part of a broader effort by Google to enhance the value proposition of its television platform.
