Google releases September Pixel Drop with updated widgets and expanded scam detection

Google has officially released its September Pixel Drop, bringing a suite of software updates to its hardware lineup. The rollout includes the integration of Android 17 QPR1 to stable channels, providing users with several functional improvements across their smartphones and wearable devices.

A primary focus of this update is the refinement of the Pixel VIP widget. Users can now interact with their designated contacts more efficiently through a home screen widget that supports single-tap calling and texting. The interface also features a bottom floating overlay navigation menu, allowing for easier switching between contacts, alongside new notification badges designed to ensure important messages are not overlooked.

Security enhancements are also part of the September package. Google has expanded its scam detection capabilities for chat application notifications to additional regions. Furthermore, users in the United States will now see inline warnings within Gboard when the system identifies potential scam activity, providing a more immediate safeguard during text-based communication.

The update extends to the Pixel Watch, which receives improvements to the Raise to Talk feature. Additionally, the watch gains new integrations for one-handed gesture applications, alongside general bug fixes intended to improve system stability and user interaction.

To mark the release of the full-cast audio editions of the Harry Potter series on Audible, Google is offering eligible Pixel users a two-month free trial of the service. Users can customize their devices with specific Harry Potter audiobook packs as part of this promotional integration.
