Apple reached a new all-time high in research and development spending during fiscal 2026, investing $45.77 billion into its future product roadmap. This figure represents a 32% increase over the $34.55 billion spent in fiscal 2025. The company’s financial disclosures indicate that while spending rose sharply at the start of the fiscal year, the investment levels have since stabilized.
The surge in R&D funding coincides with a period of intense competition in the artificial intelligence sector. CFO Kevan Parekh noted that the company is integrating AI-related investments into its existing development pipeline. During the company's Q4 2026 earnings call, leadership emphasized that these expenditures are intended to support an ambitious hardware lineup, including the recently introduced iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and new home hardware.
Financial results for the fourth quarter of 2026 showed revenue of $114.5 billion, an 11.7% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This performance contributed to a record-breaking fiscal year for the company, which saw total sales reach $478.8 billion and net income climb to $132.2 billion. The quarter also marked the first earnings report under the leadership of CEO John Ternus, who assumed the role on September 1, 2026.
The company’s growth was bolstered by strong performance in its Services division and the Mac segment, which saw a 23.7% year-over-year revenue increase. Apple reported that its active installed base of devices has surpassed 2.5 billion units. As the company enters the holiday season, it continues to prioritize investments in health, emerging markets, and enterprise sectors, including a recent deal to supply 170,000 MacBook Neo units to the Department of Education in the Philippines.
